Volcanoes, nature’s big guns, are right up there with meteors in dinosaur-killing power and civilization stopping ability. And on the 14th of April, one of Iceland’s smaller, lesser-known volcanoes erupted and brought air-travel to a halt worldwide.
What did businesses of the world do when they couldn’t travel anywhere? Did they close up shop and go on vacation—by driving there I suppose. No, they thumbed their nose at that wannabe-bigshot, belching mountain and turned to video conferencing.
Across the world video conferences fired up, meetings were held, and the business world continued to thrive. All because we have the capability to meet “face to face” at a moment’s notice without getting on a flight. It’s pretty cool when you think about it.
While we weathered the eruption of the precocious volcano Eyjafjallajokull, historically whenever it erupts, it’s larger and meaner older sister Katla has erupted soon after. So even though we’re already getting back to normal flight schedules, it could be soon that we’ll have an even bigger explosion and air-travel interruption.
But we’re not worried… we’ve got video conferencing!
Did you have a business trip cancelled by the volcano and used video conferencing instead? Tell us about your experiences.
