Saying What You Want to Say

Most of how we communicate is through speaking. Even a video conference would be dismal if you couldn't say anything to your participants. Our vocal patterns are unique and we all have our own particular speaking styles, but there are definitely ways to communicate right and communicate wrong. It doesn't matter if you're on the phone, part of a conference call, or standing in front of an auditorium, good speaking habits will help you get your message across.

For those finding themselves new to presenting their ideas, here are some tips to help you out.

  • Practicing what you want to say over and over will not only help you spot areas that need improvement, but also familiarize you with your speech.
  • There's an old tip that you should picture your audience naked to help calm yourself. While this may work in public speaking, its value with conference calls is dubious. A similar idea would be to simply meet your audience. It will make the atmosphere less hostile, and you will be able to pick out friendly faces in the crowd while you speak.
  • Really examine the need for your opening line. Grade it on a scale of 1 to 10 and subtract 3 for its actual impact when you say it to your audience. For example, if your joke is only a 7, then prepare for a level 4 reaction. Your best bet is to say simple hello, introduce yourself, and thank your audience for being there.
  • Tell stories to your audience. They are enjoyable, less critiqued than a joke, and very humanizing. A good story will help you connect and get your message across.
  • Speak as if to one person, no matter the size of the audience. When you break it down, you are trying to influence each person, even if you are saving time by talking to them as a group.

Natural sounding, confident public speaking is not an inherent trait. With the right attitude and practice, anyone can become comfortable when mass communicating.
