A title is exactly like a headline, a sound-bite, a summary, or a blurb. You want it to grab people's attention. You need it to generate interest and compel them to find out more. A good title, like a good headline, guides someone to read on. For example, I could have used a different title for this blog entry, such as: A Good Title is Important.

Boring, I know.

Unless your webinars are mandatory -- i.e. employees must attend -- an interesting title is crucial. People aren't going to want to attend a long and boring meeting, but they will look forward to an interesting and exciting one. They'll bring their friends - if you have allowed it - and you'll get a great turnout.

But how do we go about creating exciting conference call titles? The Power of Reflection has some great ideas for creating attention-grabbing titles. Two good examples are the “How to” and “Question” types of titles. The “How to” title informs and promises something your participants will want. A good one is, “How to Create Great Presentation Titles!” The “Question” title asks an open-ended question designed to make your audience think and crave your answer. "Why Do Titles Make Such an Impact?" would be a good way to get people thinking.

In creating titles, you can prey upon human nature. Curiosity kills cats, but can also lead people where you want them to go. By using a title such as, "Hidden Power of Titles," you spark a need to know in people. If you combine curiosity with statistics, you can go over the top by taking titles to shocking levels. "Great Titles Improve Attendance by 50%." Make sure, though, that your claims are not unfounded.

A final tip: do field testing for your titles. If you have created a title by yourself, it may not be as grand to other people. Show your title to a friend along with another title and see which one they find more exciting.
